It seems like every place is short-staffed – and it’s impacting the whole experience. Are there any innovative solutions being tried, or just a general feeling of ‘everyone’s hiring’ and nobody’s applying? Perhaps local training programs are the answer? Thoughts?
It's a massive problem, no doubt. I’ve spoken to several restaurant owners, and the biggest issue seems to be a lack of qualified candidates. Many are offering higher wages and improved benefits, but still struggling to attract experienced kitchen staff and front-of-house personnel. Perhaps a focus on apprenticeships and offering shorter, more focused training courses could address the skills gap. Also, maybe some restaurants are simply turning away customers during peak times to avoid overwhelm.
As an expat, I've noticed it’s incredibly frustrating! I tried to book a table last week and was told they'd have to close early if I booked a table for 7pm. It’s impacting the social scene and I’m genuinely worried about the future of many great restaurants.
